Essential Viols Updated 11-20-09 All models I make are now available in "essential" style. The idea is to simplify the decorative and non-essential elements, saving time and labor, allowing me to offer the otherwise same instrument for 20% less. Using quality, seasoned woods and careful, historically accurate construction methods, the only differences from the historical copies I make are: 1. one line of purfling on the front only 2. a solid maple fingerboard and tailpiece 3. a simplified, original scroll design 4. "scalloped" c holes....

"scalloped" c hole
Back of maple and cherry
Bridge design after a c.1680 original, which I now use on all my instruments.

...There are actually many historical examples made much in this way, for example many french instruments are purfled with one line on the front only (as are the Collichon copies I make) and often fingerboards and tailpieces are made of flamed maple or other non veneered woods on all types of viols.
